19951020 GENEVA, 18 October (UN Information Service) -- The Human Rights Committee this morning examined the progress report submitted to it by the Special Rapporteur on follow-up of the Committee's views on communications. During its public discussion, held briefly in the middle of its closed meeting, members exchanged views concerning the release of political prisoners and compensation to victims of human rights violations.

The follow-up report was based on activities under the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Optional Protocol provides for the confidential consideration of communications from individuals who claim to be victims of a violation of any of the rights proclaimed in the Covenant.
