In Ecuador, a UN team arrived on 24 March to support authorities to respond to the environmental emergency caused by a major oil spill. The spill in the Esmeraldas Province, in the country’s north-west, has contaminated key water sources, leaving half a million people without access to safe water and sanitation.

In Sudan, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned in the strongest terms the looting of vital humanitarian supplies from Al Bashair Hospital in Jabal Awlia in Khartoum. These supplies are intended to support malnourished children and provide critical healthcare to mothers and newborns.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a report today stating that human-induced climate change reached new heights in 2024, with some consequences irreversible over hundreds — if not thousands — of years. The report also noted that 2024 was the warmest year in the 175-year observational record.

In Syria, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and its partners continue to deliver aid across the country. This includes restoring water supplies, providing food and nutrition assistance, distributing winter aid and supporting vulnerable mothers and children.

In South Sudan, the UN peacekeeping mission (UNMISS) there is intensifying efforts alongside international peace partners to de-escalate the tensions following clashes between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and armed youth in Upper Nile, as well as conflict between organized forces in Western Equatoria state.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released its monthly Food Price Index today, and the benchmark for global food commodity prices rose in February, propelled by price increases for sugar, dairy and vegetable oil. Another FAO report states that 45 countries currently require external assistance for food.

In Gaza, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that since last month, humanitarian partners have screened more than 100,000 children under the age of five for malnutrition, enrolling those who need it for treatment.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today released a report urging the Government of Colombia to protect civilians during ongoing violence by armed groups. The report details how armed groups use violence to exert control over the population, furthering their own economic interests and undermining governance.
