Secretary-General Kofi Annan will welcome Baby 6 billion on 12 October, the day the United Nations has chosen, based on expert projections, to mark this unprecedented population milestone. At a ceremony in Sarajevo's Kosovo Hospital, the Secretary-General will greet a newborn baby symbolically designated as the 6 billionth world citizen.
Kofi Annan, of Ghana, is the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations. The first Secretary-General to be elected from the ranks of United Nations staff, he began his term on 1 January 1997.
The humanitarian community faces a major challenge today from the increase in the number of natural disasters, and by a recent upsurge in armed conflict, according to Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his 1999 report on the work of the Organization, which is being released today.
