The Sixth Committee (Legal) welcomed the outgoing President of the International Court of Justice today according to its annual tradition, who reflected on the future of the Court where she has served for over 13 years.

Meeting concurrently with the Security Council, the General Assembly today elected one judge out of a pool of three candidates for the International Court of Justice in The Hague to serve a term beginning today, 4 November 2022, and ending 5 February 2027.
The General Assembly today adopted a resolution delivering $3.52 million to the Secretary-General to ease global food insecurity by facilitating the implementation of two key initiatives aimed at bringing agricultural commodities from Ukraine and the Russian Federation to world markets and countries in need. The Assembly also considered the International Court of Justice’s annual report.
Following the death of Judge Antônio Cançado Trindade of the International Court of Justice on 29 May, the Security Council today set the date for an election to fill this vacancy.
Meeting independently from but concurrently with the General Assembly, the Security Council today filled one open seat in the International Court of Justice.

The General Assembly today adopted a resolution emphasizing the need for adequate, predictable and sustainable funding of the United Nations resident coordinator system, following a day‑long debate on the work of the International Court of Justice, which marks its seventy-fifth anniversary in 2021.
The Security Council decided today that a vacancy on the International Court of Justice would be filled by election in November.
The Security Council reaffirmed today its ongoing commitment to fostering interaction with the International Court of Justice, as it took note of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations and the 100th anniversary of the Statute of the Permanent Court of International Justice.
