Following nomination by the Secretary-General, the General Assembly, on 22 December 2017, elected Maimunah Mohd Sharif of Malaysia as Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat).

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, following consultations with the Chairpersons of the regional groups of Member States, today informed the General Assembly of his intention to appoint Maimunah Mohd Sharif of Malaysia as the next Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat).

With two third of the world’s population projected to live in cities in the next 30 years, the fate of humanity hinged on how Governments addressed the “megatrend” of urbanization, the General Assembly heard today, as it convened a high-level meeting to discuss the implementation of the New Urban Agenda agreed by Member States in 2016.
