Fred Eckhard, Acting Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by informing correspondents that Secretary-General Kofi Annan was deeply disturbed by reports of a fresh round of killing in the Ruhengeri district of northern Rwanda. Twenty villagers had reportedly been murdered by armed gangs.

Fred Eckhard, Acting Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by announcing that the Secretary-General warmly congratulated the leaders who concluded the Hebron agreement yesterday, as well as those who worked so hard to support the negotiating effort. Fred Eckhard, Acting Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by announcing that United Nations security and other United Nations staff had worked all through the night to inspect a backlog of some 80,000 pieces of mail. By midnight, they had found two more live letter-bombs, making a total of four collected throughout the day.
