Economic and Social Council

Opening its 2024 session today, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations recommended 72 entities for special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and deferred action on 58 others.

Following are UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s opening remarks, as prepared for delivery, at the high-level opening segment of the General Assembly-Economic and Social Council Thematic Event on Landlocked Developing Countries, in New York today:

Member States today called for collective will to address cumulative pressures on oceans and their resources, which pose direct threats to people who depend on them, as the General Assembly adopted two draft resolutions in a joint debate on oceans and the law of the sea as well as sustainable fisheries.

The Economic and Social Council held elections today to fill vacancies in several of its subsidiary bodies.

The Economic and Social Council today elected two Vice-Presidents, adopted its agenda and assigned responsibilities for its 2024 session, also taking action on decisions related to a special meeting in Chile and geospatial information, while further welcoming the donation of new chairs for its Chamber by the delegation of Sweden.

Despite many commodity-dependent countries underperforming in development and falling further into debt, the global economy lacks an adequate response to the crisis, a Nobel Laureate told the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) and the Economic and Social Council as they met today for their annual joint meeting.

The Economic and Social Council, opening its 2024 session today, elected its bureau and adopted its provisional agenda.

The Economic and Social Council concluded its management segment today, adopting five resolutions and six decisions from its subsidiary bodies that addressed strengthening development planning for Haiti, support for Non-Self-Governing Territories and the rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied territory, as well as the protection of Palestinian women.

Resuming its two-day Management Segment today, which began on 7 June, the Economic and Social Council considered 16 reports of its subsidiary bodies and other United Nations entities and adopted 30 draft texts, including a decision granting 174 non-governmental organizations consultative status.
