Today, the Security Council is expected to hold its quarterly open briefing on Afghanistan ahead of the 17 June expiry of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (Political) and Officer-in-Charge of UNAMA Georgette Gagnon is expected to give updates on the situation in the country.

The Security Council will hold a briefing at 3 p.m. to discuss the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine. The meeting was requested by Ukraine in a 2 June letter and supported by the Council’s European members, including Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom. The anticipated briefers are Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Indrika Ratwatte. Ukraine and several countries from the region are expected to participate in the meeting under rule 37 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure.

Today, the General Assembly will discuss the annual report of the Security Council (document S/2026/426), covering the Council’s work from 1 January to 31 December 2025. The report was adopted unanimously by the Council on 22 May 2026. The annual report is submitted pursuant to Article 24(3) of the UN Charter, which provides that the Security Council “shall submit annual and, when necessary, special reports to the General Assembly for its consideration”. This requirement is the Council’s clearest Charter-based obligation to the wider UN membership, and the Assembly’s discussion of the report offers Member States an opportunity to assess the Council’s performance in discharging its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Pakistan, which coordinated the preparation of the report’s introduction in its capacity as Council president for July 2025, described the process as an “instrument of transparency, accountability and institutional dialogue” between the Council and the broader UN membership.

In the morning, the General Assembly will hold elections for members of the Economic and Social Council, hear remaining statements in explanation of vote after the vote on draft resolution A/80/L.65 on the Report of the International Court of Justice, and take action on draft resolution A/80/L.60 on global health and foreign policy. In the afternoon, it will debate and take action on draft resolution A/80/L.73 on protracted conflicts in the GUAM area and their implications for international peace, security and development; take action on draft resolution A/80/L.72 on integrated and coordinated implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the major UN conferences and summits in the economic, social and related fields; and on draft resolution A/80/L.70 on causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa.

Today, the General Assembly is scheduled to elect five non-permanent members to the Security Council for the two-year term from 1 January 2027 through 31 December 2028.

The 193-member Assembly will meet to elect its President and Vice-Presidents for the upcoming eighty-first session. The Secretary-General will draw lots to determine the Member State that will occupy the first seat in the Assembly Hall at the upcoming session. Following the adjournment of the plenary meeting, consecutive meetings of the Assembly's six Main Committees for the purpose of electing their respective Chairs and the Bureau for the eighty-first session of the General Assembly will be held.

The Council will hold a briefing under its “Threats to international peace and security” agenda item, after Romania requested the convening of an urgent meeting in a 29 May letter (S/2026/447), in which it said that a Russian drone carrying explosives entered Romanian airspace overnight between 28 and 29 May. The Council’s European members—Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia, and the United Kingdom —supported the meeting request. UN Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to brief.

The Security Council will meet in emergency session today at France’s request amid a sharp escalation in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces have reportedly made their deepest incursion into Lebanon since their 2000 withdrawal, seizing the strategic Beaufort Castle area near Nabatiyeh, while a strike near a hospital in Tyre wounded staff members.

The Security Council votes on draft resolution to extend the South Sudan sanctions regime and the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee.
