Reaffirming the important work of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) today approved without a vote a resolution concerning that body, as speakers underscored the imperative of concerted and apolitical scientific work on this matter while also considering how to improve their working methods.

The General Assembly held its annual debate today on nuclear energy in which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says interest across the globe is growing for myriad purposes such as electricity generation and water desalination — while Member States debated over pockets of nuclear safety concern from Ukraine to Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The General Assembly today adopted a resolution that demands that the Russian Federation immediately return the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to the full control of the sovereign and competent authorities of Ukraine to ensure its safety and security, also adopting a decision and a related amendment concerning civil society participation in the high-level Summit of the Future.

The Head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) met Thursday at the UNIFIL base in Ibl el-Saqi with the mayors and religious authorities of south-eastern towns to discuss local needs and the UN’s humanitarian support to impacted communities, including to restore stability along the Blue Line.

The situation at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has deteriorated rapidly to the point of becoming “very alarming”, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi warned the Security Council today, in a meeting requested by the Russian Federation and marked by resounding calls to allow the Agency’s technical experts to visit the area to address mounting safety concerns.
