Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message to the Economic and Social Council humanitarian affairs segment, in New York today:

The Economic and Social Council concluded its 2024 management segment this morning with a discussion to integrate key messages from its subsidiary bodies and the UN system on the Council’s main theme, develop action-oriented recommendations for follow-up and feed into the high-level political forum on sustainable development (as mandated by GA resolution 75/290 A).

The Economic and Social Council today opened its 2024 management segment today taking up items including: economic and environmental questions; coordination, programme and other questions; the role of the United Nations system in the integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development into the implementation of and follow-up to the 2030 Agenda; implementation of and follow-up to major UN conferences; non-governmental organizations; summits; organizational and other matters; and elections, nominations, confirmations and appointments.

The Economic and Social Council today continued its segment on operational activities for development for the third and final day.

Discussions on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to address climate change took centre stage at a United Nations forum today, with speakers urging that investment in such technology should be more focused on solving global problems.

The Economic and Social Council filled vacancies in 17 subsidiary bodies today through election by acclamation, secret ballot and nomination, also adopting four decisions pertaining to organizational matters.

The Economic and Social Council convened today for a daylong special meeting on international cooperation in tax matters.
