Activities of the Secretary-General in Burundi, 5 - 6 May
On Friday, 5 May, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, from Kenya, to take part in the eleventh high-level meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region.
This was his first visit to the country as Secretary-General.
Upon arrival, the Secretary-General met President Évariste Ndayishimiye.
Following that meeting, he spoke to the press. He later attended a dinner hosted by President Ndayishimiye for the participants at the Regional Oversight Mechanism.
On Saturday, he had a bilateral meeting with President Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He spoke at the opening of the meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism, along with leaders from the Great Lakes region, who took stock of progress and challenges in the implementation of the agreement signed in Addis Ababa 10 years ago. (See Press Release SG/SM/21786.)
They discussed the implementation of the Luanda and Nairobi agreements.
The Secretary-General departed later that day for Spain.
