New Permanent Representative of Niger Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Niger to the United Nations, Yaou Sangaré Bakary, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Bakary served as his country’s Ambassador to Cuba from December 2021, having previously been First Counsellor in Havana from November 2018 to December 2021.  He also served as First Counsellor in Washington, D.C., July 2017 to November 2018.

He was Director of Europe, America and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, Integration and Nigeriens Abroad from 2014 to 2017; First Counsellor in Paris from 2008 to 2014; Head of the African Union Division at the Department of African Integration and Union at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Nigeriens Abroad in Niger from 2005 to 2008; and First Counsellor in Riyadh from 1997 to 2005.  In 1995, he was the Foreign Affairs Adviser, Head of the Asia-Oceania Division in the Americas Department, Asia, Oceania Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Niger.

Mr. Bakary holds a postgraduate diploma from the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, which he attended from 1994 to 1995, having previously attended the Abdou Moumouni Dioffo University of Niamey from 1984 to 1988, where he earned a master’s degree in economics.

Born on 7 November 1964, he is married and has three children.
