Secretary-General Expresses Deep Condolences on Passing of José Eduardo dos Santos, Angola’s Former President

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General was saddened to learn of the passing of José Eduardo dos Santos, former President of Angola.

As a member of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos participated in the struggle that led to the independence of Angola.  As President of Angola, he led the country through the signing of the peace agreement that put an end to the civil war in 2002.  During his tenure, Angola became an important regional and international partner and advocate for multilateralism.

The Secretary-General presents his deep condolences to the former President’s family and to the Government and people of Angola.
