Secretary-General, Mourning Former President of São Tomé and Príncipe Evaristo Carvalho, Says He Paved Way for Future Leaders

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

It is with great sadness that the Secretary-General learnt of the passing of President Evaristo Carvalho, former President of São Tomé and Príncipe.  President Carvalho was a respected statesman who paved the way for a new generation of leaders after serving as Head of State from 2016 to 2021.

The Secretary-General presents his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all the people of São Tomé and Príncipe.
