Angeli Achrekar of United States Appointed Assistant Secretary-General, Deputy Executive Director of Programme Branch, Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announces the appointment of Angeli Achrekar of the United States as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of the Programme Branch of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Ms. Achrekar brings to the position of Deputy Executive Director of the Programme Branch vast experience in leading global health programmes to eliminate HIV/AIDS as a public health threat.  Currently serving as the Principal Deputy United States Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy, supporting the leadership and coordination of the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Ms. Achrekar has, over the past 20 years, served in senior governmental roles within the United States Department of State and the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Her expertise lies in the development and promotion of policies, programmes and investments to drive global health impact, advancing the production and use of strategic information on the HIV epidemic, the reduction of health disparities and the equitable scale-up of HIV services and systems for all.

A seasoned public health professional, Ms. Achrekar holds a doctorate and master’s degree in public health, global health, epidemiology and programme design and is an experienced diplomat and collaborator with governmental, non-governmental and multilateral organizations, private sector and civil society in developing, promoting and implementing impactful and effective HIV/AIDS and global health programmes.  She is fluent in English, Spanish and Marathi.

The Secretary-General wishes to extend his appreciation to Shannon Hader of the United States, who formerly encumbered the Deputy Executive Director position, and to Eamonn Murphy, who served in recent months as Acting Deputy Executive Director, Programme Branch.
