Dedicated Digital Platform for Youth Engagement on Disarmament Now Live

NEW YORK, 23 September (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — Disarmament is at the heart of the collective security system set out in the Charter of the United Nations, with its goal to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”.

To secure our common future, everyone, across generations and anywhere on the globe, has a role to play.  Last year, the United Nations General Assembly reaffirmed the important and positive contribution that young people can make in sustaining peace and security by adopting resolution 74/64 on “Youth, disarmament and non-proliferation”.  To mark the one-year anniversary of this important recognition of youth as positive agents for change, the Office for Disarmament Affairs, with generous financial contributions from the Government of the Republic of Korea, has launched a dedicated digital platform for youth engagement on disarmament, at www.Youth4Disarmament.org.

The website fulfils a commitment by the United Nations Secretary-General under his Agenda for Disarmament and addresses the General Assembly’s request to the Secretary-General to promote the meaningful and inclusive participation and empowerment of youth on disarmament and non-proliferation issues.

This new dedicated digital platform creates space for young people to meaningfully contribute to progress on disarmament.  It seeks to engage, educate and empower young people by offering e-newsletters, training programmes, career opportunities and other resources.  Through its “#Youth4Disarmament” outreach initiative, the Office for Disarmament Affairs will continue to connect geographically diverse young people with experts to learn about current international security challenges, the work of the United Nations and how to actively participate.
