Secretary-General, Addressing Telecom World 2019, Stresses Role of Small, Medium Enterprises in Harnessing New Technologies, Mitigating Risks

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message for International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom World 2019, held in Budapest from 9 to 12 September:

It is my pleasure to greet this ITU Telecom World.

There is no doubt:  innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G and the Internet of Things can help us achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improve the lives of all.  We must harness the opportunities they bring while mitigating the risks.

Small and medium enterprises, like those gathered in your event, have a crucial role.  And the report of my High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation can guide our efforts.  It calls for improved connectivity, smart regulation that fosters innovation, and a global digital architecture that promotes trust, security and cooperation.

Together, we can ensure a prosperous, inclusive and safe digital future for all.  I thank the International Telecommunication Union for its continued leadership and I wish you a successful gathering.
