As Elections in Comoros Near, Secretary-General Calls on National Stakeholders to Renew Commitment towards Transparent, Peaceful Vote

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

In the lead up to presidential and gubernatorial elections scheduled for 24 March, the Secretary-General calls on all national stakeholders to renew their commitment to a transparent and peaceful vote that includes the full participation of women.

The Secretary-General underlines the importance of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as the professional and impartial conduct of law enforcement officials during the elections.  He stresses the primacy of dialogue and calls on all stakeholders to address any potential electoral dispute through the appropriate legal channels.

The United Nations will continue to support the people of Comoros, in consultation with the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the International Organization of the Francophonie and the Indian Ocean Commission.
