Launch of Constitutional Committee Should Spark Political Process towards Ending Conflict in Syria, Says Security Council Presidential Statement

The launch of a credible Constitutional Committee for Syria should be the beginning of a political process to end the conflict in that country in accordance with the legitimate aspirations of all its people, the Security Council said in a presidential statement (document S/PRST/2019/12) today.

Welcoming news of agreement on the Constitutional Committee’s formation, Jerry Matthews Matjila (South Africa), Council President for October, hailed the Secretary‑General’s announcement on 23 September of the agreement between the Government of Syria and the Syrian Negotiations Commission on a “credible, balanced, and inclusive” Constitutional Committee facilitated by the United Nations.

Emphasizing its strong support for the efforts of the Secretary‑General’s Special Envoy and for the United Nations initiative to convene the Constitutional Committee’s first meeting in Geneva by 30 October, the Council reaffirmed that the conflict in Syria can only be resolved through full implementation of resolution 2254 (2015).

The meeting began at 10:11 a.m. and ended at 10:13 a.m.
