New Permanent Representative of Algeria Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Sofiane Mimouni, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Prior to his latest appointment, Mr. Mimouni served as Director‑General of the Africa Department at Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2015.  He previously served as the country’s Ambassador to Iran from 2009 to 2014 and Director‑General of the Asia-Oceania Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2009.

From 1996 to 2004, Mr. Mimouni served as Algeria’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and Vanuatu.  From 1994 to 1996, he served as the Foreign Ministry’s Director of African Multilateral Relations, and from 1992 to 1994 as its Deputy Director of the Organization of African Unity.

Over his four decades in Government service, Mr. Mimouni held such positions as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations in charge of several committees, from 1988 to 1992.  He was Head of Desk for the United Nations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Direction of International Political Affairs from 1985 to 1987, and Head of Desk for the Direction of Legal Affairs from 1983 to 1985.

Mr. Mimouni holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Algiers, a bachelor’s degree from the High Institute of International Studies from the University of Paris and a postgraduate degree in international law from the University of Sorbonne in Paris.

Born in 1957 in Algiers, Mr. Mimouni is married and has two children.
