Secretary-General Condemns Deadly Attack against Mali Mission Vehicle

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General condemns the attack against a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) vehicle that killed one Nigerien peacekeeper today in Gao, Gao region. This was the second attack against MINUSMA in two days.

The Secretary-General wishes to express his sincere condolences to the Government of Niger and to the family of the victim, and commends the brave men and women serving in MINUSMA.

The Secretary-General calls on the Malian authorities to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice, and recalls that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.

In Somalia, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 124,000 people have been impacted by seasonal rains. The United Nations, with its partners, have pre-positioned supplies in nearly two dozen hotspot districts to meet the needs of nearly 770,000 people who are expected to be impacted.
