Security Council Sanctions Committee concerning South Sudan Meets with Panel of Experts

On 14 September 2018, members of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2206 (2015) concerning South Sudan were briefed by the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts on South Sudan in connection with the Panel’s workplan for 2018-2019.

With the adoption by the Security Council of resolution 2428 (2018) on 13 July 2018, the mandate of the Panel of Experts was extended until 1 July 2019.

During the consultations on 14 September, members of the Committee and the Panel discussed recent events in South Sudan in the context of the Panel’s plans to submit a midterm report to the Security Council by 1 December 2018, to be followed by a final report by 1 May 2019 and monthly updates during months when there are no other reports due.  During the meeting, delegations encouraged the Panel to continue its mandated reporting.

Delegations also exchanged views regarding various political initiatives and developments in the region and underlined the importance of Member States fully implementing the arms embargo introduced by resolution 2428 (2018), the asset freeze and travel ban on designated individuals introduced by resolution 2206 (2015), and of all parties implementing the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, as signed on 12 September 2018.
