Security Council 1591 Committee Meets to Discuss Chair’s Recent Visit to Sudan
On 13 June 2018, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning the Sudan held informal consultations to consider the report of the Chair’s visit to Sudan, which took place from 13 to 20 April 2018.
The purpose of the visit was to obtain information on the state of implementation of the sanctions measures through opening channels of dialogue to see the precise facts on the ground, towards feeding into the Security Council’s review of the sanctions measures on Sudan. It was the third visit of a Chair of the Committee to Sudan, the first one having taken place in January 2014 and the second one in May 2017.
During the informal consultations, the Chair provided an overview of the findings, observations and recommendations contained in her report, which was transmitted to Committee members on 6 June 2018. Committee members agreed that the situation in Darfur had evolved considerably since the imposition of the sanctions regime in 2004, with many positive developments. Several members looked forward to further progress in specific areas which they highlighted. The three recommendations, addressed to the Committee, were supported by its members with some additional input.
Committee members welcomed the continued cooperation of the Government of Sudan with the Committee and its Panel of Experts, and hoped that it would be further strengthened.
