General Assembly Elects Iceland to Human Rights Council, Adopts Fourth Committee Text Endorsing 2018 Proposals of Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations

The General Assembly adopted a consensus resolution today endorsing the proposals, recommendations and conclusions of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations from its 2018 substantive session and urging Member States, the Secretariat and relevant United Nations organs to take all necessary steps to implement them.

By the text — titled “Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects” and contained in the report of its Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) (document A/72/449/Add.1) — the Assembly decided that the Special Committee would continue to comprehensively review the whole question of such work in all its aspects.

The Special Committee’s proposals, recommendations and conclusions are contained in chapter V of its report (document A/72/19), covering 12 February to 9 March 2018.

In other business, the Assembly elected Iceland to the Human Rights Council, following the withdrawal of the United States from the Geneva‑based body, for a term of office beginning today and ending on 31 December 2019.

The General Assembly will reconvene at a time and date to be announced.
