Commission on Limits of Continental Shelf, Forty-Fourth Session Appointments

NEW YORK, 25 July (Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea) — On 24 July, the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held the first plenary meeting of its forty-fourth session, held from 24 July to 8 September.  (For background on this session, please see Press Release SEA/2058.)

Following the Solemn Declaration made by its members pursuant to rule 10 of the Rules of Procedure of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the Commission proceeded with the election of its officers:  Yong Ahn Park was elected Chairperson of the Commission; Martin Vang Heinesen, Jair Alberto Ribas Marques and Simon Njuguna were elected Vice-Chairpersons.  The officers were elected for a term of two and a half years.  The election of one Vice-Chairperson from among members nominated by States parties belonging to the Group of Eastern European States was postponed pending the arrival of one of these members who, for health-related reasons, could not be in New York for the opening of the session.

Following consultations, the Commission also appointed members of its subsidiary bodies.  The following members were appointed to the Committee on Confidentiality:  Aldino Campos, Estevao Stefane Mahanjane, Marcin Mazurowski, Toshitsugu Yamazaki and Gonzalo Alejandro Yañez Carrizo.  The Committee met and elected Mr. Mahanjane as its Chairperson and Mr. Campos as Vice-Chairperson.

The following members were appointed to the Committee on provision of scientific and technical advice to coastal States:  Lawrence Folajimi Awosika, Wanda-Lee De Landro-Clarke, Wenzheng Lyu, Marcin Mazurowski and David Cole Mosher.  The Committee met and elected Mr. Lyu as its Chairperson and Mr. Awosika as Vice‑Chairperson.

Concerning the appointment of members of subcommissions which are actively examining submissions and the election of their officers, the list below provides the outcome of the relevant proceedings:

• Subcommission established for consideration of the partial revised submission made by the Russian Federation in respect of the Arctic Ocean:  Lawrence F. Awosika (Vice-Chair), Aldino Campos, Mazlan Bin Madon (Chair), Jair A. R. Marques (Vice-Chair), Marcin Mazurowski, Yong Ahn Park and Clodette Raharimananirina.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the partial revised submission made by Brazil in respect of the Brazilian Southern Region:  Lawrence F. Awosika (Chair), Martin Vang Heinesen (Vice-Chair), Domingos de Carvalho Viana Moreira, Yong Ahn Park (Vice-Chair), Gonzalo Alejandro Yañez Carrizo and Toshitsugu Yamazaki.  The seventh member has yet to be appointed.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the joint submission made by France and South Africa in respect of the area of the Crozet Archipelago and the Prince Edward Islands:  Aldino Campos (Vice-Chair), Wenzheng Lyu (Vice-Chair), Simon Njuguna (Chair), Estevao S. Mahanjane, Jair A. R. Marques, Marcin Mazurowski and Carlos Marcelo Paterlini.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Kenya:  Lawrence F. Awosika (Vice-Chair), Martin Vang Heinesen (Chair), Mazlan Bin Madon, Jair A. R. Marques (Vice-Chair), Marcin Mazurowski, Domingos de Carvalho Viana Moreira and Yong Ahn Park.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Mauritius in respect of the region of Rodrigues Island:  Lawrence F. Awosika (Vice-Chair), Martin Vang Heinesen, Mazlan Bin Madon (Chair), Jair A. R. Marques (Vice-Chair), Domingos de Carvalho Viana Moreira and Yong-Ahn Park.  The seventh member has yet to be appointed.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Nigeria:  Wanda-Lee De Landro-Clarke, Martin Vang Heinesen (Vice-Chair), Wenzheng Lyu (Vice-Chair), Estevao S. Mahanjane (Chair), Simon Njuguna, Carlos M. Paterlini and Toshitsugu Yamazaki.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by France in respect of La Réunion Island and Saint-Paul and Amsterdam Islands:  Adnan Rashid Nasser al-Azri (Vice-Chair), Ivan F. Glumov, Emmanuel Kalngui (Vice-Chair), Domingos de Carvalho Viana Moreira, David Cole Mosher (Chair) and Gonzalo Alejandro Yañez Carrizo.  The seventh member has yet to be appointed.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Côte d’Ivoire:  Adnan Rashid Nasser al-Azri, Estevao S. Mahanjane (Chair), David Cole Mosher (Vice-Chair), Simon Njuguna, Carlos Marcelo Paterlini (Vice-Chair) and Toshitsugu Yamazaki.  The seventh member has yet to be appointed.
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Sri Lanka:  Aldino Campos (Vice-Chair), Wanda-Lee De Landro-Clarke (Vice‑Chair), Ivan F. Glumov, Emmanuel Kalngui, Wenzheng Lyu, Clodette Raharimananirina and Gonzalo Alejandro Yañez Carrizo (Chair).
• Subcommission established for consideration of the submission made by Portugal:  Adnan Rashid Nasser al-Azri, Wanda-Lee De Landro-Clarke (Chair), Ivan F. Glumov, Emmanuel Kalngui, Mazlan Bin Madon (Vice-Chair), David Cole Mosher and Clodette Raharimananirina (Vice-Chair).
