Security Council Sanctions Committee concerning South Sudan Meets with Panel of Experts

On 28 July 2017, members of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2206 (2015) concerning South Sudan were briefed by the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts on South Sudan in connection with the Panel’s workplan for 2017-2018.

With the adoption by the Security Council of resolution 2353 (2017) on 24 May, the mandate of the Panel of Experts was extended until 30 June 2018.

During the consultations on 28 July, members of the Committee and the Panel discussed recent events in South Sudan in the context of the Panel’s plans to submit a report to the Security Council within 120 days of the adoption of resolution 2353 (2017), as well as a midterm report, final report and monthly updates during months when there are no other reports due.  During the meeting, delegations encouraged the Panel to continue its mandated reporting.

Participants also exchanged views regarding various political initiatives and developments in the region and underlined the importance of Member States fully implementing the sanctions regime, including the assets freeze and travel ban on designated individuals, and of all parties implementing the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.
