Meeting with Democratic Republic of Congo, Regional States: Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda

On 30 January 2017, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo met with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda.

During the meeting, the Chair of the Committee encouraged the invited States to provide their views on the midterm report of the Group of Experts (document S/2016/1102) and the recommendations contained therein.  The Chair also delivered a briefing on the work of the Committee.  He expressed appreciation of having these regular meetings with regional States, and noted that he considered these meetings as key Committee activities towards the shared goal of establishing peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and region.  The Chair expressed concern over the activities of armed groups in the country, and called attention to the need to continue efforts to formalize the natural resources sector, in light of information provided by the Group in the midterm report.  He further encouraged the invited States to present any good practices or specific issues that they wished concerning the national implementation of the measures in pursuance of resolution 2293 (2016).

The invited States welcomed the meeting and the opportunity to provide their views on the midterm report of the Group of Experts.  States expressed their wish to participate in more such meetings with the Committee in the future, and noted their willingness to cooperate with the Group of Experts and the Committee towards furthering peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region.
