Jeju Island to Host Sixteenth United Nations-Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-proliferation Issues, 16-17 November
NEW YORK, 14 November (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The sixteenth United Nations-Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non‑proliferation Issues will take place on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, on 16 and 17 November.
The annual event is organized by the Office for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Korea. Around 40 representatives from Governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as research institutes, academia and non-governmental organizations will participate in the Conference. Youngju Oh, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, will open the Conference.
This annual Conference provides an important forum for a candid and constructive exchange of views among participants on current challenges to security, disarmament, non-proliferation and arms-control issues, both at the global and the regional level.
The 2017 Conference will address technological advances and their challenges to peace and security, as well as a pathway for the denuclearization of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Participants will further reflect on regional and global developments in the areas of non-proliferation and disarmament. They will also discuss strengthening the verification and control of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials, including by considering relevant approaches, new technologies and case studies.
The Conference is financed by the Government of the Republic of Korea, including through its voluntary contributions to the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
