Conference Begins Working Sessions on Revised Version of Draft Legally Binding Instrument to Ban Nuclear Weapons

The United Nations Conference negotiating a legally binding instrument to prohibit and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons began closed working sessions today on the revised draft convention (document A/CONF.229/2017/CRP.1/REV.1).

During a brief plenary meeting focusing on procedural matters, Conference President Elayne Whyte Gómez (Costa Rica) congratulated delegations, observers and civil society representatives for their “very hard work” so far, saying that each passing day brought them closer to a text they could adopt on Friday, 7 July.  In the interim, the Conference would reconvene at 5 p.m. on Friday, 30 June, to hear a summary of the progress made by the working groups, and to consider a programme of work for next week.
