New Permanent Representative of Ireland Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, Geraldine Byrne Nason, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Nason was Ireland’s Ambassador to France and Monaco from 2014 to 2017.  She previously served as Second Secretary-General in the Department of the Taoiseach from 2011 to 2014, with responsibility for European Union affairs, the Economic Management Council and the office of the Tanaiste.

A career diplomat, Ms. Naron served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union from 2008 to 2011.  Among other roles, she headed Ireland’s Nations Forum on Europe from 2004 to 2005.  She was Director for Governance at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris during the 1990s, having begun her Government service in 1981.

She holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in literature from Saint Patrick’s College in Maynooth, as well as an honorary doctorate of laws from Maynooth University.  In 2014, she was elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, Ireland’s highest academic honour.

Born in 1959, she is married and has one son.
