New Permanent Representative of Maldives Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of  Maldives to the United Nations, Ali Naseer Mohamed, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Prior to his most recent appointment, Mr. Mohamed served in various roles in his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Foreign Secretary since 2013, and Additional Secretary in the Policy Planning Division from 2012 to 2013.

Before taking time off to work on his PhD, he was Director-General of the Policy Affairs Directorate from 2007 to 2008, Assistant Director-General in the Department of External Resources from 2005 to 2007, and Assistant Director in the same department from 2003 to 2005.

Mr. Mohamed’s other Government postings included Assistant Director in the Department of Foreign Relations between 2001 and 2003; Desk Officer in charge of research from 1997 to 2001; Assistant Protocol Officer between 1994 and 1996; and Administrative Officer from 1991 until 1994.  He began his foreign service career as an Attaché in the Management Division of the Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka, serving there between 1985 and 1991.

Mr. Mohamed earned his PhD and Master of Arts degrees in diplomatic studies from the Australian National University, and the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, respectively.  He is also a business administration graduate of Australia’s University of Sydney.

Born on 2 November 1969, he is married and has two children.
