Amid Court Order for Partial Re-run in Comoros, Secretary-General Reiterates Support for Peaceful, Credible Elections

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General is following closely political developments in Comoros in the wake of the recent judgment of the Constitutional Court ordering a partial re-run of the elections for President and for Governor of Anjouan.  The new polls are scheduled for 11 May.

The Secretary-General reiterates his commitment to supporting the efforts of the Comorian authorities to create a climate of confidence, conducive to peaceful, inclusive and credible elections.  The United Nations will work together with the African Union in this regard.

The Secretary-General urges the Government and all the actors involved in the electoral process to respect the legislation and the established rules, in conformity with the protocole d’accord of 15 March.
