Secretary-General Welcomes Sudan Government’s Signing of Proposed Road Map Agreement, Urges Other Parties to Do So, as Well

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the latest initiative of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel for Sudan and South Sudan to bring together the Government of Sudan, the National Umma Party, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/North, Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Minni Minawi to reach an agreement on a cessation of hostilities, humanitarian access and assistance, and an inclusive national dialogue process.

The Secretary-General welcomes the signing, on 21 March, by the Government of Sudan, of the Road Map Agreement proposed by the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel.  He calls on the Government to fully abide by the Agreement and urges the other parties to sign it, as well.  This would constitute a valuable step towards ending the war, providing assistance to communities in need and enhancing the environment for an inclusive national dialogue.
