Secretary-General Appoints Susan D. Page of United States Deputy Special Representative for United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Susan D. Page of the United States as his Deputy Special Representative for Rule of Law in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Ms. Page will succeed Carl Alexandre of the United States, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his dedicated service in Haiti and his contribution to the strengthening of the justice and law-enforcement bodies in the country.

Ms. Page brings to the position extensive managerial and leadership experience in diplomacy, international development and rule of law.  She was the first United States Ambassador to South Sudan, after which she served as the Acting United States Ambassador to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

As well, Ms. Page held the position of Senior Advisor in the Office of the United States Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan and served as United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.  She also brings extensive United Nations experience in rule of law, having worked as the Director of the Rule of Law Advisory Unit in the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) and as Senior Legal Adviser for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sudan and in Rwanda.

Ms. Page holds a Doctor of Law degree from the Harvard Law School and a degree in English with high distinction from the University of Michigan.  She received certificates of Merit and Distinction in English and Psychology from St. Andrews University in Scotland and conducted research on women’s and children’s rights in Nepal under a Rotary International postgraduate fellowship.
