Security Council Press Statement on Colombia’s Peace Agreement

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Román Oyarzun Marchesi (Spain):

The members of the Security Council welcomed the ratification by the Colombian Congress of the new Final Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–People’s Army (FARC-EP).  They commended the parties for their commitment to bringing an end to the conflict in Colombia after more than 50 years and congratulated all those who worked constructively in the consultations over recent weeks to produce a new Agreement.

The members of the Security Council welcomed the leadership shown by the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP to upholding the ceasefire.  They trusted the parties would continue their positive cooperation and maintain recent momentum to begin swift implementation of this historic Agreement in order to ensure a transition to peace that benefits all Colombians.

The members of the Security Council recognized the contribution of all parties involved in Colombia’s peace process, in particular the Republic of Cuba and the Kingdom of Norway as guarantors, and the Republic of Chile and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela as accompanying countries.

The members of the Security Council recalled their full commitment to the peace process in the Republic of Colombia, reiterated their determination to support Colombia’s implementation of the Final Peace Agreement in accordance with resolution 2261 (2016), and looked forward to the Secretary-General’s first 90-day report on implementation of the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Colombia.
