Group of Experts Coordinator Briefs Security Council Committee on Situation in Democratic Republic of Congo
On 10 October 2016, the Coordinator of the Group of Experts established by resolution 1533 (2004) and recently extended pursuant to resolution 2293 (2016) briefed the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) on updates submitted to the Committee concerning the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Coordinator noted that the Group continued to focus on investigations concerning armed groups, including the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF ) and the Forces démocratiques de libération du Rwanda (FDLR), two of the biggest and most detrimental forces affecting peace and security in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. In that regard, the Coordinator noted that human rights abuses continue with impunity.
The Coordinator also said that the exploitation of natural resources in the country continued, as did the potential for armed groups and criminal networks to benefit from illegal taxation and the plunder of supply chains.
Members of the Committee welcomed the update from the Coordinator of the Group of Experts.
