Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Briefs Security Council Sanctions Committee on the Central African Republic

On 5 August 2016, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2127 (2013) concerning the Central African Republic heard a briefing by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict pursuant to paragraph 29 of resolution 2262 (2016). 

The Special Representative noted that, while reporting on sexual violence in the Central African Republic remained challenging, the efforts of the United Nations system and other humanitarian actors remained critical to ensuring the end of impunity in relation to sexual violence.  She highlighted in this regard, the weak state of national accountability institutions and the rule of law, and noted that her office continued to work with national counterparts to provide needed support.  She underlined the importance of the timely establishment of the Special Criminal Court as an accountability measure in the fight against impunity.  Finally, the Special Representative encouraged delegations to consider adding names of individuals responsible for acts of sexual violence to the Committee’s Sanctions List.

Delegations welcomed the Special Representative’s presentation and reiterated their dismay at continued reports of sexual violence in the country.  Members encouraged the Special Representative to continue to continue providing information to the Committee concerning acts of sexual violence in the Central African Republic, including names of perpetrators.
