Security Council ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee Amends Three Entries on Its Sanctions List

On 24 June 2016, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) enacted the amendments specified with underline and strikethrough in the entries below on its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 2 of Security Council resolution 2253 (2015) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

A. Individuals associated with ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida

Location: Yemen. Alternative location: Saudi Arabia (2004 – 2006). Formed in Jan. 2009 when Al-Qaida in Yemen combined with Saudi Arabian Al-Qaida operatives. Leader of AQAP is Nasir 'abd-al-Karim 'Abdullah Al-Wahishi (QDi.274)  Qasim Mohamed Mahdi Al-Rimi (QDi.282). Ansar al-Shari’a was formed in early 2011 by AQAP and has taken responsibility for multiple attacks in Yemen against both government and civilian targets.
