United Nations Forum on Forests Elects President, Vice-Presidents to Bureau

Acting by acclamation today, the United Nations Forum on Forests elected Peter Desseau, Canada’s Director of Forest Services and Natural Resources, President of its twelfth session.  His candidacy was presented by the Group of Western European and Other States.

Also elected by acclamation were Clarissa Souza Della Nina (Brazil), Wu Zhimin (China) and Tomas Krejzar (Czech Republic) as Vice-Presidents.

A subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council, the Forum was created in October 2000 by resolution 2000/35 of that organ, with the main objective of promoting the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and supporting long-term political engagement to that end, in accordance with the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development.

The twelfth session began today and will run until 27 April.
