Japan to Host Conference on World Free of Nuclear Weapons, 11-14 December

NEW YORK, 9 December (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The “International Conference in Nagasaki — Towards a World Free of Nuclear Weapons” will take place in Nagasaki, Japan, from 11 to 14 December.  The Conference includes two events, a Forum of Youth Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons on 11 December and the twenty-sixth United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues from 12 to 14 December.

The United Nations Conference on Disarmament Issues is co-organized by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific and the Government of Japan.  The Conference provides a forum for candid and constructive exchanges of views on current challenges and possible solutions to key disarmament, arms control and security issues, including those at the regional level.  The Conference is financed by the Government of Japan through a voluntary contribution to the Office for Disarmament Affairs.

Over 50 representatives from Governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as research institutes, academia and non-governmental organizations will participate in the Conference.  The Conference will be opened by Kim Won-soo, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs; Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan; Hodo Nakamura, Governor of Nagasaki; Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki; and Shigeru Katamine, President of Nagasaki University.
