Jeju Island to Host Fifteenth United Nations–Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Issues, 17-18 November

NEW YORK, 16 November (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The fifteenth United Nations–Republic of Korea Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non‑proliferation Issues will take place on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, from 17 to 18 November.

The annual event is organized by the Office for Disarmament Affairs, through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Korea.  More than 40 representatives from Governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as research institutions, academia and non-governmental organizations, will participate in the Conference.  Choi Jong-moon, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Kim Won-soo, Under Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, will open the Conference.

This annual Conference provides an important forum for a candid and constructive exchange of views among participants on current challenges and possible solutions to key disarmament, arms-control and security issues, including disarmament and non-proliferation concerns at the regional level.

The 2016 Conference will address Democratic People’s Republic of Korea nuclear issues, including implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 2270 (2016).  Participants will also discuss the nexus between chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear security and cybersecurity, as well as international efforts to establish effective export controls.

The Conference is financed by the Government of the Republic of Korea through voluntary contributions to the Office for Disarmament Affairs.
