New Permanent Representative of South Sudan Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations, Akuei Bona Malwal, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Malwal served as South Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti from 2014, and concurrently as Permanent Representative to the African Union, Intergovernmental Authority for Development and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Between 2012 and 2014, he was Director General of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, based in Juba, having served as the Ministry’s Director of Protocol from 2011.

A career diplomat, he was based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 2007 to 2011, serving as Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission in the Embassy of Sudan.  Between 2006 and 2007, he was Ambassador and Deputy Director of the Ministry’s African Affairs Department in the Ministry.

Mr. Malal holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in the United States.

Born on 10 September 1959, he is married with one child.
