New Permanent Representative of Myanmar Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations, Hau Do Suan, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

From 2013 until his appointment, Mr. Suan was Myanmar’s Ambassador to Canada.  Between 2009 and 2013, he was Deputy Director-General and then Director-General of the Political Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after serving as Director of the Middle East and Africa Division.

Mr. Suan has served in various positions since joining the Ministry in 1979.  He was Consul General in Myanmar’s Consulate in Kunming, China, from 2004 to 2005; Counsellor and Minister Counsellor at his country’s Embassy in China from 2003 to 2006; and Deputy Director of the East Asia and Pacific Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1999 to 2003. 

Prior to that, he was counsellor in Myanmar’s Embassy in Australia, a position he held from 1996 to 1999, and Head of the Ministry’s International Organizations Division from 1991 to 1996.

Mr. Suan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Master of Arts in public policy from the National University of Singapore.

Born on 1 November 1954, Mr. Suan is married and has two children.
