New Permanent Representative of Japan Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations, Koro Bessho, presented his credentials to UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson on 22 June.

Prior to his latest appointment, Mr. Bessho was Japan’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea since 2012.  From 2010 to 2012, he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Over four decades of Government service, Mr. Bessho’s assignments included Deputy Vice-Minister for Foreign Policy/Director-General of the Foreign Policy Bureau (2008-2010) and Director-General of the International Cooperation Bureau (2006-2008).  In addition, he served in his country’s Permanent Delegation to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 1998 to 2000, Japan’s Embassy in the United Kingdom from 1997 to 1998, and the Embassy in the United States from 1990 to 1993.

Mr. Bessho holds a graduate diploma in law from the University of Tokyo.

Born on 5 February 1953, he is married and has two children.
