New Permanent Representative of Ukraine Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, Volodymyr Yelchenko, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

This would be Mr. Yelchenko’s second term as Permanent Representative in New York, having held the post from 1997 to 2000.  Prior to his current appointment, he was Ambassador to the Russian Federation, a position he held from 2010.  Between 2008 and 2010 he was Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).  Before that he was Ambassador to Austria from 2005 to 2008, concurrently serving as Permanent Representative to UNOV.

In 2005, Mr. Yelchenko was appointed First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs after serving as Chairman of the National Commission of Ukraine for the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 2004 to 2005.  He held several other positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 2003 and Deputy Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 2001 to 2003.  He was Director of the Foreign Ministry between 1995 and 1997.

Mr. Yelchenko graduated from Kyiv State University with a Master of Arts in international relations and international law.

Born on 27 June 1959, he is married and has one daughter.
