Secretary-General Conveys ‘Deepest Condolences’ to Those Affected by South Asia Earthquake, Says UN Agencies Mobilizing in Support

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General’s thoughts are with the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan today in the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck Badakshan Province in Afghanistan.

Reports are still coming in but it is clear that there has been loss of life and serious damage to infrastructure in both countries.

The Secretary-General sends his deepest condolences to the people and Governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to everyone affected, particularly those who have lost family members and friends.  He wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

United Nations agencies are mobilizing and stand ready to support Government-led relief operations in both countries, if requested.
