Secretary-General Strongly Condemns Suicide Attacks in Northern Cameroon

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the twin suicide bombings that targeted the city of Fotokol, in the north of Cameroon, on 12 July.  He extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Cameroon and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in the terrorist attacks.

The Secretary-General is encouraged by the measures already taken by the Government of Cameroon to counter the Boko Haram threat and commends the Government and people of Cameroon for welcoming refugees from the region since the beginning of the crisis.

The Secretary-General expresses his support for the Government of Cameroon and countries of the region and encourages them to further strengthen their cooperation in addressing the threat posed by Boko Haram, as well as ensuring strict compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
