Secretary-General, in Video Message, Says Launch of Dubai’s International Humanitarian City Strategy Comes at Critical Time for Region, World

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message for the launch of the International Humanitarian City’s Strategy 2015-2020, in Dubai, aired on 12 January:

His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

I commend His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of United Arab Emirates, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President of United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for their strong commitment to working with the United Nations in tackling major humanitarian crises.

The UAE [United Arab Emirates] provides key financial and logistical support.  By hosting UN stockpiles, and facilitating a timely response to emergencies, Dubai, in particular, has played a valuable role in international humanitarian efforts.  It has become a vital humanitarian hub in the region.

The implementation of a strategy for 2015 to 2020 comes at a critical time for the region and beyond.  I congratulate Dubai’s leadership and the efforts made by the International Humanitarian City in enabling longer term solutions.

I also commend the initiative of the Humanitarian 10 Advisory Council.  Dubai, with its unique geographical location, diverse national humanitarian organizations and the presence of large number of international NGOs [non-governmental organizations], also provides a good environment for information sharing.

You can count on my full support, and that of the United Nations, as you embark on this effort to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches all who are in need.  Thank you.
