Security Council Adopts Annual Report for 2014-2015 to General Assembly

The Security Council today adopted its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2014 to 31 July 2015.

Opening the meeting, Council President Román Oyarzun Marchesi (Spain) expressed appreciation to the delegation of New Zealand, which he said had prepared the introduction of the draft report as President of the Council in July, with the participation of other Council members.  He also thanked the Secretariat for its contribution.  He pointed out that the report had been prepared in accordance with a 26 July 2010 note (document S/2010/507).

Gerard van Bohemen (New Zealand) said that, at the Council’s request, his Government had taken a revised approach by providing an introduction that was half the length of recent introductions, attempting to provide a summary.  The intensive process had taken place over three months.  Noting ongoing efforts of the Working Group on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions to determine the best approach in the future, he expressed appreciation for efforts by Lithuania and Russian Federation in that regard.

He also noted calls for increasing dialogue with the Assembly.  Acknowledging that the introduction “would not go as far as some would wish”, he added that he would have hoped for more reflection on the Council’s performance.  Nonetheless, it required the Council’s support.

Following those statements, the Council unanimously adopted the report; the action would be reflected in a note by the President, to be issued as document S/2015/771.
