United Nations Department of Public Information Associates New NGO Partners, Bolstering Civil Society Ties Worldwide

The Department of Public Information/Non-Governmental Organizations Committee associated 19 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), including one organization which received probationary association.  This brings to 1,439 the number of NGOs working with the Department in the area of communications and outreach.

The Director of the Outreach Division at the United Nations Department of Public Information, Maher Nasser, welcomed the new group, which includes NGOs from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America.  The newly associated organizations come from Bangladesh, Cameroon, Chile, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iran, Republic of Korea, Senegal and the United States and work on a range of issues, including economic development, rights of the differently-abled and elderly, poverty eradication, sexual and reproductive health, environmental protection, farmer’s rights, education and interfaith dialogue.

In describing the Department’s partnership with NGOs, Mr. Nasser stated that he looks forward to a fruitful collaboration with these newly associated NGOs to bring awareness on the work of the United Nations to the different regions where they operate and engage communities to bring to pass the post-2015 development agenda.  The Department of Public Information greatly values its partnership with civil society and welcomes the newly associated NGOs and their involvement in the work of the United Nations, he said.

Following are the newly associated non-governmental organizations, listed alphabetically:

Academy of Dentistry International (United States); Caring & Reaching Elders Rights (Republic of Korea); COANIQUEM (Chile); Comic Relief (United States); Confederation Paysanne du Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo); Dayemi Foundation (Bangladesh); Disability Association of Tavana (Iran); Dream Touch for All (Republic of Korea); Environmental Development Action in the Third World (Senegal) Family Health Association of Iran (Iran); Girl be Heard (United States); Asia Center for Human Rights/Human Asia (Republic of Korea); Justice for All (United States); LDS Charities (United States); Project 1808 Inc. (United States); International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development (Cameroon); University of Wisconsin-Madison (United States); and Roshd Foundation/Roshd Charity (Iran) on a 1-year probationary basis.

Instituto HSBC Solidariedade of Brazil was disassociated based on a request aligned with a change in the entity’s mandate and work.

About the DPI/NGO association:  NGOs that successfully meet the criteria for association with DPI are provided with up to six grounds passes (including two for youth representatives aged 18-32) to facilitate access to United Nations officials, meetings, events and informational sessions at United Nations Headquarters in New York and are eligible to propose and lead NGO briefings.  A dedicated NGO Resource Centre with material and information on the work of the Organization is located in the UNITAR Building, at 801 UN Plaza, 2nd Floor, New York.
